I Needed A Virtual Drawing Pad so I Made an App for That - Thanks to The Guys @Aviary @Trove and @Photobucket @PhotohackNYC
My Canvazz (Winner, best use of Photobucket API) - Rohit Kumar, Bonnie Sandy. APIs used: Aviary Feather API, Trove API (Flickr, Facebook, Google, Instagram, Twitter, Photobucket) see my coverage here
I an still in shock!
I needed a virtual sketchpad that I could use during Skype conversation... it' has come up several times! We're also Planning the Brooklyn Fashion Film Festival which we hope to format and position as a remote/virtual show and sell platform!
Since I started working with designers in all corners of the Globe, Virtual visual Communications tools are essential The photo/image editing software on my laptop is too heavy and often the person intiating the need for an image or croquis was at work... so they could not save or pull up images; sometimes they did not have skype so I'd use Join.me and the phone! It's amazing how reseourceful a woman can be when she wants something made!
Some had only mobile access and so while i could use our older version Aviary is built on HTML5 ano can be accessed on mobile devices!d s
it's all about logistics;- It needed to be lightweight for low bandwidth and I want to ensure the workflow is easy! At one of our meeting someone suggested Adobe Ideas... it's an I-app, plus unless you've studied digital design... you're going to need a Croquis!
If I can't find what I need ...make it. It's the "carib " in me! I don't code.. but the guys from Aviary would be there along with other developers... and it was about time I learned!
So I headed to General Assembly to NYC's First Photo Hack Day!! Is was great! The developers from the companies were there for hands on support! Now "hacks" or Hack-athons" are marathon sessions where the guys (and ladies) who enjoy playing with deconstructing and putting things back together.. well that's my definition!
These arn't the nerds many envison, you'd pass them on teh streets... contray to popular belief Their is not a "Geek Look"... they do favor printed tee shirts and jeans and the ladies are well represented with many leading teams and both groups are actually quite fashion conscious!
As usual I was the lone black female participant there was a journalist... and I am pleased to report a couple brothers! check out Peeq.it
Hacking code is NOT m ything.! I've avoided it like the plague but I spent a full 24 hours "hacking " Photo Api's.. well collaborating with some of the developer guys to create what I envisoned! I partnered with Ronit Kumar a web designer from Queens and as we have progressed to a working model! I realized I was having fun! With $5000 prize money for the best prize and a chance to demo you App on the Nasdaq Teletron , some people were on top secret mode and working right though! By two on sundat presentations began... and by then I was so tired...
My one disappointment The representative @Tumblr... I won't say much more but if you do not want to discuss your API or don't know more than I do that's really BAD... really, really bad... and we just asked a simple question! Seriously, sometimes people at tech eventstarget who they are "open" to and sometimes there's an "Ism" behind! It's rare but frankly time it's dealt with... I understand some peopel are busy ... but this was NOT the case!
Next time I'm gatting familiar with the Api's before ( I've gotten over the 'BIG fear'! Even If I'm not using the Api's I'm taking the opportunity to get some clarification from the developers! This is a rare opportunity ... well that was what I intended but integrating various codes in 24 hrs... aye!!!
I used
Wordpress as a Base
Aviay feather Api
Trove to pul Images from Flickr, Google, twitter, Facebook etc... It worked at demo ( now got to trouble shoot )
Tumblr to allow people to blog tehir images and Photo Bucket to auto save all images!
we ensured the URl was generated and so on save you can email to yourself as i said it's a lightweight hack that serves a purpose! read teh How to here
we added croquis And will continuer doing so ! Take a shot join a ahck or visit NYC Resitor NY hack space for Thursday Craftnight!
What the winner won! Yup two weeks ... of this ... nice and a couple cool prizes (I checked after the event) Like most people I'll continue working on My App... Thats so cool to Say!
Ithink it finally sank in ... MADE An APP Yippee!
