Memorial day weekend! I spent the weekend prepping to put every single aspect (and individuals) of the one-on-one communications in my projects on Google Wave! Simply putGoogle Wave is sweet!
Yet culture and personal habits make getting the local dressmaker or the production plant to use this (when they do not even consistently use emai) TOUGH! I have a source for digital printing for fabrics... not Spoonflower which while great does not meet the needs of small design companies... it is still a few month before we are set up to truly utilize this technology.
How will that affecta designer's aestethic... for that matter how will rapid prototyping such as Ponoko or Shapeways! The fact is few designer I know have heard of them! Those that do, have question, yet these companies current marketing startegies, see very little contact with the local Indie designer or fashion sector! But when in there Fashion NYC 2020 press release the mayor's Office counts the scope and potential and counts NYC design businesses at "more than" 800, I cannot blame a company that is not based in the US for miscalculating the market!
Technology has the ability to literally "light up" New York's fashion Scene... Life Dress itpblog.efuller.net Elizabeth Fuller FashionCamp's ITP Student Liason will present her thesis project! Get a close up of Dragon Skin and LED's
I've recently started exploring soft circuitry and discovered various new materials made possible with technology!
I am a fashion designer I use technology for research, design, communications and a whole lot more... I cannot yet use technology to measure and fit the actual garments on the consumer and since FIT is a huge part of my USP I also am aware that many apps that promise to be styling aids and help with fit, are little more than cool games with no significance on how the actual garments fit or sales! On the other hand the gaming sector is a great way to build brand awareness and customer loyalty! I am more optimistic about photogrammetry tools currently used for forensics and their adaptation and integration with 3d patternmaking software and augmented reality apps! In the end all have value and will change the way we "do fashion design, production and sales", but adaptation comes with outreach and education!
Which cost!
I also am fascinated by rapid
prototyping and what that will mean to my design scope and aestethic (photo- in a few hours- FashionCamp 2010 Laser cutting at Parsons nd 3D printing courtesy MAKERBOT
Social Networking... My Views on ssocial networking is not generally accepted... It is not new as a member of Brooklyn's Caribbean community... I hav seen social networks bring 3 million to Eastern Parkway each labor day and fill local "ftes with 2000 strong crowds... what is new in teh digital integration!
But ist is work and frankly has avery low roi with our target! At teh same tim eit reaches a broad audience, but few designers are set up for distance or volume sales! Thus Far no funding is being funnelled into support system.
In 2008 we distributed 5000 of these 2D code enabled fliers, Resulting in 3000 unique visitors and 85, 000 page views! We found that dispite heavy viral traffic, many Indie businesses are NOT Selling... or have no production of access to funding or financing... also of those who sold... profits were extremely low, following Social media Marketiing threads we see medium to large scale retailers with existing infrastusture reporting significant "results' (We're not sure of sales!)
So how is a Mom and Pop Business; an independent designer; a Seventh Avenue retailer or a high school student considering this career to make descions! How can you design clothing that fight exposure to UV rays if you have no idea that solarized fabrics exist! As great as Iphone Apps are they mean nothing to me if all my customers are on a Blackberry or on several different devices!
